Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Here we have a true stunner of a CD from an artist you’ve probably never hear of, much less heard, from Japanese shamisen player SATO MICHIHIRO: Rodan, a Swiss import issued in 1989 by the Hat Art label, now long out of print. Now we’ll tell you why you need to own this CD, beginning with a little background information. The shamisen is a Japanese stringed instrument (related to the lute) that has figured in that country’s traditional music since time immemorial. Michihiro, a young player fed up with the rigidity of playing “by the book,” broke with his teacher and began to aggressively seek out new and radical approaches to his instrument. His first exposure to Western audiences was through Ganryu Island, his 1986 duo LP with fellow musical maverick John Zorn. Several years later, Zorn produced and directed the CD we offer you today, grouping Michihiro in 23 varied duos, trios and quartets with an astonishing bunch of some of New York City’s finest experimental musicians from the mid-Eighties. Accompanying Michihiro and his shamisen in a constantly shifting array of sounds and ideas are Fred Frith (guitar), Bill Frisell (guitar), Elliott Sharp (double neck guitar, bass) Tom Cora (cello), Ned Rothenberg (alto sax), Steve Coleman (alto sax), Mark Dresser (bass), Joey Baron (drums), Gerry Hemingway (drums), Mark Miller (drums), Ikue Mori (drums, drum machine), Samm Bennett (drums), Tenko (voice), Luli Shioi (bass, voice), Christian Marclay (turntables), and Nicolas Collins (electronics). The obvious comparison here would have to be John Zorn’s early “game” pieces, particularly his Cobra project (in fact, nearly every musician who appears here has performed in Cobra at one time). As with that piece, Zorn “directs” the action while the musicians play. The music is a many-tiered, multifaceted exploration of sound that’ll transport your head hither and yon for 68 unforgettable minutes. Killer artwork from underground cartoonist Mark Beyer is the frosting on a very toothsome cake. This title has been out of print for years, with no reissue in sight. The disc is sealed and mint.
